Servicing for farm vehicles

Five Critical Tips When It Comes to Car Servicing

Many people treat a car like a simple commodity. Yet for the average person the automobile is one of the largest investments they will make. It makes sense, therefore, to pay attention to how you treat your car and never to just "wing it." What should you be doing to look after this valuable investment?

Keep up with Servicing

Some people think that car manufacturers are mainly in the business of making money and will always "recommend" that you take certain actions and spend a certain amount of your funds in order to service your vehicle. However, one of the smartest things you can do in order to preserve the longevity of your automobile is to do just that – follow the manufacturer's recommendations when it comes to replacing parts and fluids, or servicing.

Having said that, what other tips should you consider as you look after your car?

The Occasional Treat

In particular, fluids represent the lifeblood of your vehicle and this does not only refer to engine oil. The type of fuel that you put in your car is crucial. Many people are used to just pulling up to a petrol station and adding the "usual" blend. While it may be that your manufacturer recommends a less than premium octane, you should treat your car by filling up its tank with a premium fuel at least once every quarter. This will help to extend the life of your fuel injector, as premium fuel has a number of special "detergents" that benefit the fuel delivery system

Correct Oil Grade

The modern-day motor is a very finely tuned piece of engineering. There are very tight tolerances in between moving parts. The internal components are quite resistant to corrosion and are able to withstand big changes in thermal heat. This means that you don't have to choose "thicker" or higher viscosity motor oil, as these engines are built to work with lower viscosity oil due to their tolerances. Ask your car mechanic to add thinner oil to your vehicles accordingly.

Manual Transmissions Need Extra Attention

When it comes to your automatic differential and transmission many manufacturers now provide fluids and lubricants that are meant to last for "a lifetime." Manual transmissions, though, have to put up with a lot more abuse and will therefore require periodic inspection and lubricant change, due to the less than optimum gearchange standards of a typical driver!

Be Careful With Brake Fluid

Finally, brake fluid is rated according to its ability to cope with heat. Your vehicle's manufacturer will therefore specify a particular product. As the brake fluid has to work under extreme conditions and has a very important job to fulfil its recommended that you replace it at least once a year.
